Our History

Dr. Prabhakar S. Pai has been a Medical Practitioner, a Social Worker of Bandra and Khar areas in particular and of the western suburbs in general and a Municipal Councillor since 1968.

Since 1958, Dr. Pai has fully dedicated himself to social work and to the cause of the nation. 

He established the Janata Seva Sangh, a non-profit Trust in 1962. The Trust work is to provide medical relief and sustainable healthcare services. The Trust also supports the educational needs of the underprivileged. 

The Chairman, Founder & Managing Trustee has been able to contribute appreciably to the upsurge of human endeavors to serve the less fortunate brethren, particularly in the civic, medical & educational fields.

He has worked ceaselessly for establishment of many free dispensaries, through donations from philanthropists and charitable citizens. 

The following are some of the dispensaries so far established in Bandra-Khar-Santacruz after his election to Bombay Municipal Corporation in 1968.  

  • Free Municipal Dispensary in Jawahar Nagar, Khar (East), Mumbai. The benefit of which extended to about 70,000 poor residents of the area.
  • Free Municipal Dispensary at Station Road, Bandra (West), Mumbai, known as Shri Guru Nanak Devji Free Municipal Dispensary, which caters to the needs of about 50,000 residents of the area. 
  • Shri Guru Nanak Devji Free Municipal Dispensary at Sherly Village Bandra, Mumbai. This Facility serves about 40,000 residents of this area, as also the Rajan and Mala areas. 
  • Shri Guru Nanak Devji Free Municipal Dispensary, at Dr. Ambedkar Road, Opp. Konkanastha Mahar Colony, Khar, Mumbai catered to the requirements of 75,000 people of the area.
  • A Medical Relief Centre known as Khushiram Free Municipal Dispensary & Diagnostic Centre at Swami Vivekananda Road, Municipal Tenements Compound, Khar (West), Mumbai, benefited nearly One Lakh people of the area. 
  • A Medical Dispensary, Shri Guru Nanak Devji Free Municipal Dispensary established at Santacruz (West), near Milan Talkies, having immense benefits to the residents of Santacruz- Chunabhatti area. About 50,000 people can take advantage of it. 
  • Was also instrumental in getting a donation of an Ambulance Van from the Sevak Jatha to K.B. Bhabha Hospital Bandra, Mumbai. This facility of an Ambulance had not been available in the Hospital for a very long time. Was also instrumental in expansion of the said Hospital and increasing its bed strength, as also for starting the pathology and the X-ray Departments in the said Hospital. 

EDUCATIONAL

  • Monetary donations for educational purposes was made to Janata Education Society which conducts Purushottam High school, Kher Nagar, Bandra (East), Mumbai and became the Grand Patron of the Society. 
  • Distribution of free books to the poor and deserving students among various High Schools at Bandra. 

The Sangh needed to march ahead with the times, lest the current of malcontent would uproot us, be it in the field of civic amenities, educational facilities or cultural development.    

Further the Sangh contributed in the following ways:

  • The establishment of the much needed casualty, E.N.T and Dermatology department in Bhabha Hospital, Bandra for the benefit of residents of the western suburbs. 
  • Materialisation of promised kind Donation by the Shantaram Bhat Charitable Trust of a mobile dispensary van to the K.B. Bhabha Hospital, Bandra, through the Janata Seva Sangh, for the benefit of the hutment-dwellers of Bandra, Khar and Santacruz areas. 
  • A free dispensary and diagnostic centre at the Mount Mary Church footsteps, St. John Baptist road, Bandra west Bombay 50, constructed with the help of Shantaram Bhat Charitable Trust, for the Benefit of all. 
  • Free Municipal dispensary and Diagnostic Centre at: 
    • Khar Municipal Tenants Compound, S.V. Road, Bombay – 52. 
    • Opposite Milan Talkies subway road, Santacruz west, Bombay 54.  
  • Helping the Janata Education Society which runs Purushottam High School in a rented premises at Khar Nagar, Bandra East, to have its own Building and freeships and free books to poor deserving students of the school.

Dr. Kavita Pai Vas, Trustee and medical advisor since 29th Jan 2011 and Managing Trustee since 18th Feb 2015, revived the trust activities. 

Since coming on board with the Trust, Dr. Kavita Pai Vas has been active in attending to the needs of the underprivileged in the form of free Medical Care and Advice, with an active medical clinic at the Trust premises.  She has been active with organizing Public Awareness Programs, an ongoing endeavor for promoting Wellness and Health. 

We keep ourselves updated with new developments in Medical Science and novel treatments available to diabetic patients and other endocrine illnesses. 

We hold various lectures for medical practitioners to build their knowledge on the newer modalities of treatment available. 

This helps in reaching out to various doctors and educating them on the use of these new modalities

Our Goal is to continue the work started by our Founder Members in:

  • Service of the underprivileged, educating Children and building awareness of various health and healthy living issues to educate masses. 
  • Holding Health Camps and providing Medical care, advice and facilities to ailing patients. 
  • Organizing Cultural Events to help in funding our aspirations for the underprivileged, funding the education of un-affording children in schools. In holding events further support NGO’s and other cultural organizations. 
  • Providing Medical Aid in form of Consultations at the Trust office itself. 

Since stepping into the Janata Seva Sangh, Dr. Kavita Pai Vas, along with the support of Dr. Prabhakar S. Pai and Mrs. Jyothi Pai has been actively involved in its continued services. 

  • It is functional for 6-8 hours daily and patients are seen on a regular basis. 
  • Patient Education Programs for awareness of the growing epidemic of Diabetes are being held for general Public with free registrations in and around Bandra and soon to expand all across the City. 
  • We also hold lectures for Medical Practitioners to bring to them updated Medical news, and novel modalities of Treatment for varied illnesses. 
  • We have aspirations to continue our services to villages and rural areas, in providing medical aid and also help in reform by building awareness for education of children. 
  • The Trust has various educational boards set up for the patients. 
  • Medical Camps have been held successfully.
